Description

This woodblock print from Hiroshige's celebrated series 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' (Meisho Edo Hyakkei, 1856–1858) depicts the serene moat and stone walls near Hibiya and Soto-Sakurada in Edo — the historic heart of what is today central Tokyo, Japan, adjacent to the outer grounds of Edo Castle (now the Imperial Palace). A wide blue moat reflects the surrounding pines and low red structures, while Mount Fuji rises faintly in the misty distance beneath a warm sunset sky; swallows and a kite string add lively vertical movement against the pale pink heavens.
