Description

This vivid ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts Hakkeisaka (Eight Views Slope) in Edo (present-day Tokyo), dominated by a dramatically leaning pine tree known as Yoroi-kakematsu — 'the pine where armor was hung' — said to be where warriors ritually donned their armor before battle. Below the gnarled pine, a sweeping panorama reveals tidal flats, sailing vessels on the bay, a glowing salmon-pink sunset sky, and small figures moving along the path. The scene is from Hiroshige's celebrated series 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' (Meisho Edo Hyakkei), published in the 1850s, one of the most influential landscape print series in Japanese art history.
