Description

This vibrant woodblock print depicts the Fukagawa Hachiman Shrine grounds in Edo (present-day Tokyo), featuring a serene pond flanked by blooming cherry trees in soft pink and blazing red maples, with tiny figures strolling along the water's edge beneath a pale rose sky. The composition is part of Hiroshige's celebrated series 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' (1856–1859), one of the most iconic works of the Ukiyo-e tradition. Fukagawa, a historic district in eastern Tokyo on the banks of the Sumida River, was renowned for its Tomioka Hachiman Shrine and its lively seasonal festivities.
