Description

This dramatic Japanese woodblock print depicts a moonlit night scene at Eitai Bridge and Tsukudajima, with choppy blue-grey waters reflecting lantern light and a fleet of dark vessels moored in the distance beneath a crescent moon and scattered stars. A massive vermillion pillar dominates the foreground left, framing the composition with bold contrast against the deep midnight-blue sky. Tsukudajima is a small island district in what is now the Chūō ward of Tokyo (then Edo), historically home to fishermen who supplied fish to the shogun's court, and Eitai Bridge was one of the major bridges spanning the Sumida River.
