Description
This stunning woodblock print from Hiroshige's celebrated series 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' (Meisho Edo Hyakkei, 1856–1858) depicts the coastline at Samezu in South Shinagawa, a historic post-town on Edo Bay (present-day Tokyo Bay). Fishermen in shallow boats navigate through reedy shallows in the foreground, while sailing vessels glide along the deep-blue bay and distant mountains — likely Mount Tsukuba — dissolve into a soft pink horizon. A skein of birds arches gracefully across the pale sky, lending the composition the lyrical serenity characteristic of Hiroshige's late masterwork landscapes.
