Description

This atmospheric ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts a serene night scene on the Asakusa River (Sumida River) in Edo (present-day Tokyo), featuring a large roofed pleasure boat moored in the foreground, smaller vessels crossing the dark water, and the glittering lights of the far riverbank under a star-filled sky. The overhanging pine branch at upper left — the famed 'Pine of Success' (Shubi no Matsu) — and the Oumayagashi ferry landing ground the scene in a historic district of old Tokyo that was a hub of commerce and recreation during the Edo period. The print is plate 61 from Hiroshige's celebrated series 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' (1856–1858), renowned for its bold compositions and masterful use of deep indigo Prussian blue.
