Description

This Japanese woodblock print depicts a serene open landscape at Takinogawa in the Oji district of Edo (present-day Tokyo), featuring a large circular target or lantern mounted on a tall pole, framed by a dramatic pine tree in the foreground and clusters of pines receding into a soft blue-green distance. Small figures animate the grassy grounds while birds drift across a pale sky, evoking the quiet leisure of an Edo-period outing. Oji was celebrated for its temples, gardens, and the Takinogawa (Waterfall River) valley, a popular excursion destination for Edo residents, and is captured here in Hiroshige's iconic Meisho Edo Hyakkei (One Hundred Famous Views of Edo) series.
