Description

This woodblock print depicts five dramatic pine trees arching over the Onagi Canal in Edo (present-day Tokyo), their gnarled branches stretching across a soft blue sky tinged with a warm pink horizon at dusk. A wooden ferry boat carries passengers along the tranquil waterway while a gracefully curved bridge and tree-lined banks recede into the distance, capturing the quiet serenity of life along the canal. The Onagi Canal, located in the eastern Kōtō district of Tokyo, was a vital waterway during the Edo period used for transporting goods, and Hiroshige immortalized it as plate 107 of his celebrated series 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' (1856–1858).
