Description

This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts a tranquil evening scene along the Sanya Canal (Sanyabori) in Edo (present-day Tokyo), with small figures walking along the embankment and lush pine trees silhouetted against a dusky orange-and-blue sky. Matsuchiyama — a low hill in the Asakusa district famous for its Shōten shrine — rises in the background, framed by temple rooftops and dense greenery. The composition is plate 44 from Hiroshige's celebrated 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' (Meisho Edo Hyakkei), a landmark series of ukiyo-e landscape prints completed between 1856 and 1859.
