Description

This woodblock print from Hiroshige's celebrated series '100 Famous Views of Edo' (1856–1859) depicts laborers towing flat-bottomed boats along the Yotsugi-dori Canal (Yotsugi-dori Yosui hikifune), a man-made waterway in the northeastern outskirts of old Edo — present-day Tokyo. The sinuous blue canal leads the eye from foreground figures straining on towropes back toward distant thatched-roof settlements and Mount Tsukuba shimmering beneath a glowing salmon sky.
