Description

This woodblock print depicts Yanagishima, a district in Edo (present-day Tokyo), showing a tranquil canal scene with flat-bottomed boats gliding past a cluster of pine trees and a traditional temple or teahouse complex with red-lacquered fencing. The composition opens onto a sweeping marshland and distant mountains under a soft, hazy sky, capturing the serene atmosphere of the Sumida River lowlands. Part of Hiroshige's celebrated series 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' (Meisho Edo Hyakkei, 1856–1858), the print exemplifies his mastery of aerial perspective, flat color planes, and atmospheric landscape printing.
