Description

This woodblock print depicts the famous plum orchard at Kamata, a village in the Edo-period outskirts of what is now Tokyo, Japan, with dozens of flowering plum trees in full bloom set against a soft rose-tinted sky. Small figures stroll among the blossoms near low thatched buildings, while a fabric-draped palanquin fills the foreground right, adding a sense of lively seasonal excursion. The scene is plate 27 from Hiroshige's celebrated 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' (Meisho Edo Hyakkei), a landmark series of ukiyo-e landscapes completed between 1856 and 1858.
