This vibrant woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts a sweeping open landscape at Massaki, along the Sumida River in Edo (present-day Tokyo), with strolling figures gathered beneath tall pine trees in the foreground and cherry blossoms blooming at lower left. In the middle distance, the calm waters of the Uchigawa Inlet and Suijin Shrine are visible, while the Sekiya district stretches across the far bank; a mist-softened mountain — likely Mount Tsukuba in Ibaraki Prefecture — rises serenely on the horizon. The scene is plate 36 from Hiroshige's celebrated series 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' (Meisho Edo Hyakkei), a landmark of the Ukiyo-e genre that profoundly influenced Western Impressionist artists including Van Gogh.
