Description
This vibrant woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts a bustling open plaza in Edo (present-day Tokyo), filled with figures in traditional dress, with the forested grounds of Zōjōji Temple rising in the middle distance beneath a glowing red sky. Zōjōji is a historic Buddhist temple in the Shiba district of Minato, Tokyo, long associated with the Tokugawa shogunate and still standing today near Tokyo Tower. The scene captures the lively street life and serene shrine environs characteristic of Hiroshige's celebrated 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' series.
