Description

This woodblock print depicts a tranquil pond scene inside the Sujikai Gate (Sujikabashi Mon) in Edo — present-day Tokyo — with ducks floating on still water, pine boughs framing the foreground, and Mount Fuji visible on the distant horizon. Kites drift through a soft pink sky above the moat and stone walls of the shogunate's castle district, evoking a serene New Year's atmosphere typical of Edo life in the 1850s. The print belongs to Hiroshige's celebrated series '100 Famous Views of Edo,' a landmark ukiyo-e series completed in 1858 that documented iconic landscapes of the city.
