Description

A large wooden sailing vessel with a billowing white sail glides across choppy blue-green waves, its passengers visible at the stern, while additional boats dot the open water in the distance. On the right bank rises a wooded promontory topped with white-walled buildings, evoking the bustling port of Kuwana in present-day Mie Prefecture, Japan. This is Station Forty-Three of Hiroshige's celebrated woodblock print series 'Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō' (1833–34), depicting the famous seven-ri (roughly 28 km) ferry crossing at the mouth of the Kiso River — one of the most dramatic sea passages along the historic coastal highway linking Edo to Kyoto.
