Description

A sudden, driving rainstorm sweeps diagonally across the scene as travelers scramble up a hillside path, hunching beneath paper umbrellas and straw rain capes to shield themselves from the downpour. Lush bamboo groves bend under the force of the rain while diagonal streaks of white convey the storm's intensity with masterful economy. This woodblock print depicts Shōno, the 45th post station on the historic Tōkaidō road — the great coastal highway connecting Edo (modern Tokyo) to Kyoto — and is widely regarded as one of Hiroshige's most celebrated designs from his landmark 1833–1834 series "Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō."
