Description

This woodblock print depicts travelers on a mountain path at Sakanoshita — the 49th post station on the historic Tōkaidō road connecting Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto — with tall pines framing figures in colorful robes against dramatically layered grey peaks. Hiroshige's characteristic soft blue gradations fill the sky and distant ridges, evoking the misty atmosphere of the Suzuka mountain range through which the Tōkaidō passed in present-day Mie Prefecture.
