Description

This serene woodblock print depicts a moonlit night scene along the Tōkaidō road at the Akasaka post station, showing a traveler leading a laden horse past tall pine trees and a roadside inn with a yellow thatched roof. Akasaka-juku was the 37th of the fifty-three post stations along the historic Tōkaidō highway, the main coastal road linking Edo (modern Tokyo) to Kyoto in feudal Japan. The soft gradation of the indigo sky, the luminous full moon, and the quiet procession of figures capture the tranquil atmosphere of night travel characteristic of Hiroshige's celebrated landscape series.
