Description

This woodblock print depicts a traditional Japanese inn (hatago) at Ishibe station on the historic Tōkaidō Road, showing travelers resting in tatami rooms while a blossoming plum tree graces the foreground garden. Ishibe was the fiftieth of the fifty-three post-stations along the Tōkaidō highway connecting Edo (present-day Tokyo) to Kyoto, located in what is now Kōka City, Shiga Prefecture. The dusky blue-grey sky and warm interior lighting create an intimate, twilight mood characteristic of Hiroshige's celebrated landscape series.
