Description

This woodblock print depicts the coastal station of Shirasuka along the historic Tōkaidō Road, showing travelers and resting figures beneath dramatic wind-swept pine trees silhouetted against a vivid orange sunset sky over Enshu-nada Bay. Shirasuka was the 33rd of 53 post stations on the Tōkaidō, the great highway connecting Edo (modern Tokyo) to Kyoto during the Edo period, and its clifftop vista over the Pacific coast made it one of the road's most celebrated scenic viewpoints. Hiroshige captures the tranquil evening mood with characteristic flat color planes, a golden-roofed teahouse in the foreground, and distant sails on the glistening water below.
