Description

This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the post-town of Minakuchi (水口), the fiftieth station on the historic Tōkaidō Road, the great coastal highway connecting Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto in feudal Japan. Travelers in traditional dress bustle along a wide earthen road lined with merchant buildings and a large inn, their figures animated against a moody dark-gray sky punctuated by a solitary tall tree. The scene captures the lively commercial energy of the Tōkaidō stations, part of Hiroshige's celebrated 'Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō' series (Hōeidō edition, c. 1833–1834), widely regarded as a landmark of Japanese ukiyo-e printmaking.
