Description

This woodblock print depicts Yahagi Bridge spanning the Yahagi River at the Okazaki post-town station, with travelers and a palanquin crossing its boldly rendered yellow timber structure as flat-bottomed boats glide below. Okazaki, located in Aichi Prefecture in Japan's Tokai region, was the 38th of the 53 stations along the Tōkaidō Road — the great coastal highway connecting Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto — and was also the birthplace of Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the Edo shogunate. The composition features a dusky blue mountain, the rooftops of Okazaki Castle, and a warm pink horizon, all rendered in Hiroshige's signature lyrical, atmospheric style.
