Description

This vibrant woodblock print depicts the post-town of Miya — modern-day Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture — the forty-first station on the historic Tōkaidō Road that linked Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto. Ferryboats and cargo vessels crowd the harbor as laborers load goods beneath a towering vermilion torii gate of the renowned Atsuta Shrine, one of Japan's most sacred Shinto sites and guardian of the sacred sword Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi.
