Description

A procession of travelers huddled under conical straw hats and sheltered by a large blue palanquin canopy pushes through a driving spring rainstorm, rendered with Hiroshige's signature diagonal rain lines and muted atmospheric palette of grays, greens, and blue. The scene depicts Tsuchiyama-juku, the forty-ninth of the fifty-three post stations along the historic Tōkaidō highway that connected Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto during the Edo period, located in present-day Koka City, Shiga Prefecture, Japan. Hiroshige's mastery of weather and mood — here conveyed through slanting rain, shadowed cryptomeria trees, and the procession's bent figures — made this series, published by Hōeidō around 1833–34, one of the most celebrated achievements in Japanese ukiyo-e printmaking.
