Description
This Japanese woodblock print captures a dramatic rainstorm at the Futakawa post station, one of the fifty-three stops along the Tōkaidō Road — the historic coastal highway linking Edo (present-day Tokyo) to Kyoto. Diagonal lines of driving rain sweep across a landscape of dark pine trees and storm-lit sky in purples and teals, while travelers scramble for shelter beneath yellow rain covers and roadside stalls. The composition's vivid atmosphere and masterful use of color and line exemplify Hiroshige's celebrated series documenting life and scenery along the Tōkaidō, published in the early 1830s.
