Description

This woodblock print depicts Kameyama station on the historic Tōkaidō road, showing travelers in wide straw hats passing through a gate beneath dense pine trees, with the white-walled Kameyama Castle visible at upper left against a dramatic red-tinged sky. Kameyama (in present-day Mie Prefecture, Japan) was one of the fifty-three post towns along the Tōkaidō, the coastal highway connecting Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto during the Edo period. The composition balances dark, twisting pines with misty mountains and the elegant castle, capturing the atmospheric journey that made Hiroshige's Tōkaidō series one of the most celebrated works of Japanese ukiyo-e printmaking.
