Description

This woodblock print depicts a procession of travelers — a samurai on horseback, foot attendants, and porters — moving along the Tōkaidō road at Yoshiwara (present-day Fujinomiya area, Shizuoka Prefecture), framed by dramatic wind-bent pine trees. Mount Fuji rises majestically in the background, snow-capped and serene against a deep blue sky, a view for which Yoshiwara, the 15th post station, was historically celebrated as one of the finest vantage points along the great coastal highway connecting Edo and Kyoto. The calm, ink-washed fields and muted blue palette give the scene a quiet, contemplative mood characteristic of Hiroshige's landscape mastery.
