Description

This woodblock print depicts a wintry, desolate scene at Hamamatsu — the 30th post-station on Japan's historic Tōkaidō highway — where travelers huddle around a small fire at the base of a towering pine tree, its trunk a rich reddish-brown dominating the foreground. A flat, frost-bleached plain stretches toward a distant treeline under a pale blue sky, capturing the quiet chill of a Japanese winter. Hamamatsu, located in present-day Shizuoka Prefecture, was one of the most important stops on the Tōkaidō road connecting Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto, and Hiroshige immortalized it in his celebrated series 'The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō' (c. 1833).
