Description

This classic Japanese woodblock print depicts the bustling harbor post town of Shinagawa — the first station on the famous Tokaido road south of Edo (modern Tokyo) — with travelers, merchants, and laborers filling a lively coastal street lined with low wooden buildings. Tall-masted sailing vessels dot the calm blue bay, while a sweeping pine tree frames the scene on the right, exemplifying Hiroshige's mastery of atmospheric perspective and seasonal mood. The print is from his celebrated series 'The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido' (Tokaido Gojusan-tsugi), first published around 1833–1834 by Hoeido, one of the most influential and beloved series in ukiyo-e history.
