Description

This serene woodblock print depicts flat-bottomed ferryboats on the Tenryu River at Mitsuke, the 29th post station of the Tokaido road, with two figures standing aboard a wooden vessel in the foreground while a group of travelers cross the misty river in the middle distance. The Tenryu River in present-day Shizuoka Prefecture was one of the most challenging river crossings on the Tokaido, Japan's great coastal highway linking Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto, as it had no bridge and travelers depended entirely on ferries. Rendered in Hiroshige's signature soft palette of muted blues and greens, the composition evokes the quiet, atmospheric calm of early morning mist rising off the water.
