Description

This woodblock print depicts a lively summer horse fair at Chiryu, the fortieth post station on the Tokaido road, where dozens of horses—black, white, and dappled—wade through shallow marshland tended by handlers in wide-brimmed hats, beneath a distinctive windswept pine tree and a soft salmon-hued sky. Chiryu (in present-day Aichi Prefecture, Japan) was historically celebrated for its famous horse market, held each summer at the Chiryu Shrine, and Hiroshige captured it as one of the most animated scenes in his landmark series 'Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido.' The composition's sweeping horizontal landscape, cool blue-green marshes, and clusters of animals create a serene yet bustling pastoral mood characteristic of Hiroshige's Ukie-influenced naturalism.
