Description

This dynamic woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige captures the boisterous Atsuta Shinji festival procession at Miya (present-day Nagoya's Atsuta district), the 42nd post-station on the Tōkaidō road. Dozens of semi-clad porters and attendants in red loincloths jostle and strain alongside a laden packhorse, while blue-robed officials stand witness from a raised platform — conveying the kinetic energy and festive chaos of one of Japan's most celebrated Shinto shrine festivals.
