Description

This luminous woodblock print depicts the harbor at Ejiri station on the Tokaido Road, with white-sailed boats clustered in a busy port against a sweeping panorama of Miho no Matsubara — the celebrated pine-covered peninsula in present-day Shizuoka City, Japan. Deep teal waters, rust-hued mountains, and a pale orange horizon create a serene, atmospheric composition characteristic of Hiroshige's mastery of light and landscape. Part of his landmark 'Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido' series (c. 1833–34), this station scene captures the vital maritime traffic along the historic coastal highway that linked Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto.
