Description

This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the interior of a roadside inn at the post town of Akasaka, one of the fifty-three stations along the historic Tokaido Road — the great coastal highway connecting Edo (modern Tokyo) to Kyoto in feudal Japan. Female attendants and travelers are shown in lively domestic activity across two open rooms, with a palm-like tree framing the foreground and rain-streaked gray sky overhead, conveying the warmth and bustle of shelter during travel. The composition is part of Hiroshige's celebrated series 'The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido' (Tokaido Gojusan Tsugi-no Uchi), published around 1833–1834, which is widely regarded as a landmark of the ukiyo-e tradition.
