Description
This evocative woodblock print depicts a moonlit evening scene along the Tokaido road at Numazu, a post town in present-day Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. Tall dark conifers frame a quiet canal and distant bridge, while two travelers — one carrying a heavy pack — make their way along a riverside path beneath a luminous full moon. The print is part of Hiroshige's celebrated series 'The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido' (Tokaido Gojusan-tsugi no Uchi), published by Hoeido in 1833–1834, renowned for its poetic rendering of atmosphere and seasonal light.
