Description

This woodblock print depicts a dramatic mountain pass at Nissaka, the twenty-sixth station of the Tōkaidō road, showing travelers ascending a steep, dark hillside flanked by gnarled pine trees, with distant blue mountains — including a faint silhouette of Mount Fuji — visible through a pale opening on the left. The scene captures the famous Sayo no Nakayama pass in present-day Kakegawa, Shizuoka Prefecture, a location long celebrated in Japanese poetry for its wild, melancholy beauty. Part of Hiroshige's celebrated '53 Stations of the Tōkaidō' series (c. 1833–1834), the print masterfully uses atmospheric perspective and subtle color gradation to convey both the physical hardship and serene solitude of travel on the historic Edo-period highway.
