This woodblock print depicts a bustling post-station scene at Fujieda, the 22nd stop along Japan's historic Tōkaidō highway, where porters and packhorse handlers transfer goods and luggage amid a flurry of activity. Figures in various states of dress load and unload crates, lead a dark horse, and rest at a roadside stall, capturing the lively commerce of Edo-period travel. Fujieda was a key relay station in present-day Shizuoka Prefecture, and Hiroshige's celebrated 'Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō' series documented every stop along the approximately 500-kilometer route linking Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto.
