Description

This woodblock print from Hiroshige's celebrated 'Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō' series depicts the post-town of Hara, with a resting woman in colorful kimono and a porter carrying heavy loads against a backdrop of pine trees and the iconic snow-capped summit of Mount Fuji. Hara was the 14th post-station along the Tōkaidō road, the great coastal highway that connected Edo (present-day Tokyo) to Kyoto in feudal Japan, and was renowned for its exceptionally close and dramatic views of Mount Fuji. The soft grey and blue palette of the mountain and sky contrasts with the warm, saturated colors of the figures, conveying the quiet rhythm of Edo-period travel.
