Description

This iconic Japanese woodblock print features the gnarled, dark branches of white-blossoming plum trees in dramatic close-up, with tiny figures strolling among the trees in the background beneath a soft peach and blue sky. The composition is taken from Hiroshige's celebrated series '100 Famous Views of Edo' (Meisho Edo Hyakkei), published in 1857. Kameido is a district in eastern Tokyo — then known as Edo — famous for its Ume Yashiki plum orchard, which drew large crowds each spring during the blossoming season.
