Description

Diagonal streaks of driving rain fall over a broad wooden bridge as figures clutch umbrellas or dash across, rendered in the bold flat colors and graphic lines of the Japanese woodblock tradition. This is plate 52 from Hiroshige's celebrated series 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' (1856–1858), depicting the Shin-Ōhashi bridge spanning the Sumida River in Edo (present-day Tokyo), Japan.
