Description
A dramatic Japanese woodblock composition features a large, gnarled pine tree dominating the foreground, its sweeping branches silhouetted against a glowing sunset sky of orange and pale green. Below, a broad bay dotted with sailing vessels stretches to a distant shoreline, while figures and a horse animate the lower left. This print is from Hiroshige's celebrated series 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' (1856–58), depicting scenes around Edo — the historic city now known as Tokyo — whose waterways, bay, and lively street life defined Edo-period Japan.
