Description

This vibrant ukiyo-e woodblock print depicts a lively cherry-blossom viewing scene at Gotenyama Hill in Shinagawa, Edo (present-day Tokyo), with elegantly dressed figures strolling and resting on red picnic mats beneath sweeping pine trees. The composition is bathed in rich indigo and teal tones, punctuated by bursts of white cherry blossoms in the foreground and a warm pinkish horizon glowing behind the hill. Gotenyama was one of Edo's most celebrated hanami (flower-viewing) destinations during the Edo period, renowned for its hillside cherry trees overlooking the sea; this print is from Hiroshige's celebrated series 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' (Meisho Edo Hyakkei).
