Description
This plate depicts a symmetrical arrangement of colonial green algae (Melethallia) rendered in extraordinary botanical detail, showcasing radial star-like forms in varying shades of green against a pale cream background. The illustration is Plate 34 from Ernst Haeckel's landmark scientific art book 'Kunstformen der Natur' (Art Forms in Nature), first published in full in 1904, in which the German naturalist and artist documented hundreds of organisms with meticulous precision and aesthetic flair. The intricate geometric patterns of the algae colonies — each cell distinctly delineated with honeycomb-like borders and dotted centers — give the composition a jewel-like, almost mandala quality that made Haeckel's work a major influence on Art Nouveau design.
