Description

This striking plate from Ernst Haeckel's landmark scientific atlas 'Kunstformen der Natur' (Art Forms in Nature, 1899–1904) depicts a symmetrical arrangement of decapod crustaceans — crabs, lobsters, shrimp, and hermit crabs — rendered in luminous white on a deep black background. Published in Leipzig, 'Kunstformen der Natur' comprised 100 lithographic plates celebrating the geometric beauty of natural organisms and became hugely influential on Art Nouveau design. The composition is at once a rigorous scientific illustration and a work of graphic elegance, with each specimen arrayed to reveal the intricate architecture of claws, carapaces, and antennae.
