Description

This striking plate from Ernst Haeckel's landmark scientific atlas 'Kunstformen der Natur' (Art Forms in Nature, 1899–1904) depicts a symmetrical arrangement of decapod crustaceans — crabs, lobsters, shrimp, and hermit crabs — rendered in luminous white on a deep black background. Published in Leipzig, 'Kunstformen der Natur' comprised 100 lithographic plates celebrating the geometric beauty of natural organisms and became hugely influential on Art Nouveau design.
