Description

This plate from Ernst Haeckel's celebrated scientific atlas 'Kunstformen der Natur' (Art Forms in Nature, first complete edition 1904) depicts a symmetrical arrangement of calcareous sponges (Calcispongiae), rendered in fine lithographic detail against a soft blue-grey ground. The central starburst specimen radiates outward with spiky skeletal spicules, surrounded by cross-sections, vase forms, and top-down circular views of various sponge species, showcasing Haeckel's signature blend of scientific precision and ornamental beauty.
