Description

This striking plate from Ernst Haeckel's landmark scientific compendium 'Kunstformen der Natur' (Art Forms in Nature) depicts a symmetrical arrangement of barnacles and related crustaceans — Cirripedia — rendered in exquisite black-and-white lithographic detail against a dark background. The central crab-like form is surrounded by shells, barnacle plates, and feathery cirri in a radiating composition that blurs the line between scientific illustration and decorative art. First published in sets between 1899 and 1904, Haeckel's 'Kunstformen der Natur' featured 100 plates and profoundly influenced Art Nouveau design and natural history illustration worldwide.
