Description
This plate from Ernst Haeckel's landmark scientific-art portfolio 'Kunstformen der Natur' (Art Forms of Nature, published 1899–1904) depicts an intricate array of Bryozoa — microscopic aquatic invertebrates also known as 'moss animals' — rendered in pale cream and white against a muted teal background. The composition showcases the extraordinary symmetry and geometric complexity of bryozoan colonies, including spiky star-burst forms and layered rosettes, displayed as a scientific taxonomy. 'Kunstformen der Natur' was first published in ten installments by the German biologist and artist Haeckel, and its 100 lithographic plates profoundly influenced Art Nouveau design and biological illustration worldwide.
