Description
This exquisite scientific illustration depicts multiple species of Trachomedusae — a group of deep-sea jellyfish — rendered with extraordinary botanical precision in soft mint greens, warm terracotta, and cream tones. The composition radiates from a large circular mandala-like medusa at the center, surrounded by diverse specimens showing bells, trailing tentacles, and intricate internal structures. Originally published as Plate 36 in Ernst Haeckel's landmark 1904 folio 'Kunstformen der Natur' (Art Forms in Nature), the work revolutionized both scientific illustration and decorative art, directly influencing the Art Nouveau movement.
