Description
This plate from Ernst Haeckel's celebrated scientific art compendium 'Kunstformen der Natur' (Art Forms in Nature, first published 1899–1904) depicts a stunning array of bryozoans — tiny aquatic invertebrates also called 'moss animals' or Moostiere in German — rendered in meticulous lithographic detail against a dark slate background. The composition showcases colonies in astonishing variety: spiny globular clusters, branching fronds, latticed mats, and individual zooids, all arranged in Haeckel's characteristic symmetrical, tapestry-like style. Haeckel's plates, originally produced with lithographer Adolf Giltsch, are widely regarded as foundational works bridging natural science and Art Nouveau design.
